morning, fire crews are still trying to figure out what caused a manassas neighborhood to go up in flames. this was the scene as the fire tore through more than half a dozen homes, completely destroying at least three. we have a dramatic picture and what investigators know so far. mike, what can you tell us? >> good morning, pamela. well, the smell of smoke is still in the air after this massive fire in manassas. to give you an idea how much smoke and ash is still in the air. news chopper 7 captured dramatic pictures from this manassas subdivision. neighbors called 911 when they saw the smoke, and moments later they saw the house was engulfed in flames. firefighters from manassas and prince william county, they say high winds caused burning embers to jump from one house to the next. firefighters were able to knock down the houses, but after that, there was little left. and with such dry conditions, firefighters did remain on scene . every 15 or 20 minutes that they have gone through the different parts of these homes and knocked down hot spots and embers using their hose, the red c

in manassas, surae chinn, 9 news now. >> thank you. >>> what caused the fire to spread from home to home? and what could keep that from happening again? the manassas fire marshal says if the homes were required to have sprinklers they would have helped to keep the fire down until firefighters could get there. also, the homes were all built to code but they do sit much closer together than single- family homes in older neighborhoods. these homes were 10 to 15 feet apart and the exterior walls made of vinyl siding over particle board which are both flammable. >> these are lightweight construction developments covered with vinyl siding and not generally designed to be a fire resist tan structure. when you have a well advanced fire and a windy day you are going to get lateral spread. >> reporter: fire chief says the most important preventive measure for people is to practice better fire safety. be more careful when you cook in the kip and use outdoor grills and never leave them going and walk away. >>> now an update on a woman charged with animal cruelty after her dog died in a hot car.

his injuries tonight after he was attacked and stabbed behind a daycare center in manassas. it happened at the canberry shopping center and that's where peggy fox joins us to tell us more about one of the young suspects under arrest in this attack. peggy. >> that's right. one of the suspects, a 15-year- old boy was caught right away. the other suspect is still on the loose tonight. police describe them as young, hispanic males. the victim is a 59-year-old man, he is a property assessor who is taking pictures behind the building this morning just trying to do his job. >> just as people were coming to work and just after children arrived at the daycare center right behind the playground, a man who was doing property assessment work and taking pictures was attacked in broad daylight. >> two assailants came up from behind him and demanded his camera and money. when he refused, they attacked him. >> two women saw the attack and started honking their horns. one called her coworker in the process. >> she yelled out to the guy, are you hurt? is everything okay? did they take your walle

in the 8300 block of tillet loop in manassas. elaine reyes is live on the scene with the cleanup. good morning sglor good morning, eun. it goes to show how hot the fi was. it is still under investigation. we are in the summer lake area of manassas, just outside, ma mass as. 11 residents are displace and the red cross is helping them. the fire started at a home around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. the wind caused the fire to spread to two other homes. all three burned to the ground. smoak and flames spread to five other homes, bringing it to a total of eight. they suffered damage. two people at the scene were treated for minor injuries. >> i saw this middle one on fire only upstairs. i went in for just a second and came ba out. it seemed like ten minutes all of these went up. i said, you know, i need to pack some things and getut of here. i knew how close we are. my baby was very upset. she was screaming. >> these homes are all located in this area. they're very close together. firefighters on the scene all night, all morning long watching for hot spots, periodically brging their hose
